Soap Opera Digest and Soaps.com published the same breakdown, and both have every show back to normal on Tuesday, September 8. So GH fans lose a day. CBS viewers lose nothing.
Why is General Hospital a rerun on Labor Day?
Holidays are the one predictable gap in the daytime year. Rather than burn a new episode on a Monday when a big share of the audience is at a barbecue, ABC parks a repeat there and shifts the week's story a day later.
This year the network picked a repeat with weight behind it. Anthony Geary, who played Luke Spencer for decades and won eight Daytime Emmys as Lead Actor in the role, died on December 14, 2025 at 78. The February 20 episode was the show's goodbye to him: Lulu (Alexa Havins), newly awake after four years in a coma, learns her father is gone, with Laura, Tracy, Sonny, Carly and Elizabeth carrying the flashbacks. ABC's Nathan Varni announced the rebroadcast.
What are the other reasons GH doesn't air?
Two of them, and they behave very differently.
- National pre-emption. ABC takes the whole 2 p.m. hour across the country β a White House briefing, a major breaking-news block, a live sports window. Nobody gets the episode.
- Local pre-emption. Your own station cuts away for severe weather or a regional event while the rest of the country watches normally.
- Holiday encore. Planned weeks out, announced in advance, and the story simply resumes the next weekday.
Two real examples from the recent past. On January 20, 2026, ABC carried breaking coverage of a White House press conference; that day's episode moved to January 21 and the rest of the week slid a day with it. In the fall of 2025, ABC's National League wild-card coverage took the afternoon for three straight days, and the show returned that Friday.
If GH is pre-empted, will the episode still be on Hulu that night?
This is the part almost nobody spells out, and it decides whether your evening plans work.
National pre-emption: no. When ABC pulls the hour everywhere, there is no new episode to post β Hulu and ABC.com stay on the previous day. Soap Opera Digest made that explicit for the January 20 pre-emption. The episode isn't lost; it just moves to the next weekday and pushes everything behind it.
Local pre-emption: yes. The episode aired nationally, so it lands on Hulu the next day as usual. Your station is the only thing that skipped it.

Does a rerun day change the story?
No. Nothing was cut. The Friday cliffhanger you were left with is still the last new thing that happened, and Tuesday picks it up from there β which is why the encore is worth watching if you never saw the Luke tribute, and skippable if you did.
