Steve Burton Update (Sept. 2026): Jason Lost Britt, and Burton's Next Job Is a Christmas Whodunit

Short version: Steve Burton is back on General Hospital full time after a five-month gap, Jason Morgan just lost Britt over Anna Devane, and Burton's next credit is a Christmas mystery movie he is writing and producing with Bradford Anderson. He is also up for a Daytime Emmy on Oct. 30.
Steve Burton and Jason Morgan in 2026, date by date

Two things stand out in that column. July 13 did double duty — the comeback episode and the nomination landed on the same Monday. And the gap itself was shorter than the chatter suggested: 110 days between Jason's exit and his return, not a season.
Where does Jason stand on General Hospital right now?
Jason's September is a breakup, not a shootout. He refused to back Britt's attempted-murder report against Anna Devane, and on Monday, Sept. 14, Britt ended the relationship at the boathouse.
His line to Carly afterward did the damage: he still loves Britt, but he doesn't believe in her the way he believes in Carly. Our Monday recap has the scene in full, and by Tuesday the two of them were shooting pool at the Brown Dog talking it through.
By the end of the week the story had moved to Nina's extradition and Drew, with Jason off to the side — the Friday recap is where that thread picks up. For a veteran who came back in July, that is a quiet landing, which is usually the setup rather than the payoff.

What is the Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson holiday movie?
It is an untitled Christmas whodunit, and the two are not just acting in it. Burton and Anderson are co-writing and producing with Stacy Asencio-Sutphen, with Zero Gravity Management — the company behind Netflix's Ozark — attached as producers.
The pitch, as the producers describe it, mixes comedy, holiday romance and a light mystery, with two mismatched partners tripping into a case in a small town at Christmas. Jason and Spinelli fans can do the math on that pairing themselves.
Financing and distribution were still being finalized when the news broke on Sept. 14, and a casting call was out for two female leads. The team has said it is designed as the first of an annual run of mystery films, not a one-off.

Can Burton finally win the Lead Actor Emmy?
The nomination he picked up on July 13 is his fourth in Outstanding Lead Actor and his 11th Daytime Emmy nomination in total. He has two wins, both in Supporting Actor: 1998 for Jason on GH, and 2017 for Dylan McAvoy on The Young and the Restless.
So the Lead category is the one that has never gone his way. The 53rd Daytime Emmy Awards air Friday, Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. ET from the Hollywood Palladium, streaming free on the Emmys' own platforms — 40 days out from this writing.
Talking to Michael Fairman TV in July, Burton tied the nomination to the reel he submitted, which he said was meant to honor the late Leslie Charleson.
What happens with Jason next?
- Jason and Britt. Breakups on this show rarely stay clean for a month, and Britt is now tangled in the Anna case herself.
- Jason and Carly. He told her he believes in her over Britt. That is the kind of line daytime files away and uses later.
- Oct. 30. The Emmy result either closes a 28-year gap in the Lead category or extends it.
Day to day, GH airs at 2 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. CT on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu; the fuller version of that, pre-emption weeks included, is in our viewing guide.
FAQ
Did Steve Burton leave General Hospital in 2026?
He took a break, not an exit. Jason was written out on Mar. 25 and Burton returned to the studio Jun. 1, with the episode airing Jul. 13.
Why wasn't Jason on General Hospital this week?
When Jason is absent from a given episode it is usually story rotation, not a departure. If the show itself is missing from your listings, that is normally a news or sports pre-emption — we keep the running answer on this page.
Who else is new on General Hospital right now?
Two recent faces: Kearran Giovanni as Dr. Nichols, Anna's therapist, and Alimi Ballard as WSB agent William Baines. The rest of the year's arrivals and exits sit in our cast updates file, and daily coverage is in General Hospital.
