Why does Anna have a new therapist at all?
Because the old one is out of the country. Dr. Kevin Collins, Port Charles' default psychiatrist for roughly three decades of plot, is teaching in Ireland, and ComingSoon reported that Dr. Nichols steps in while he's gone.
That is a small line with a large effect. Kevin knows everyone in town, which means he can never treat anyone cleanly. Dr. Nichols starts with no history and no loyalty, and for a patient whose problem is that she no longer trusts her own account of events, a doctor with no stake in the story is the better instrument.
Anna's condition is not vague. She returned from treatment in France and kept seeing Peter August, and on Sept. 9 that delusion put a loaded gun in her hand on Spoon Island. The next day's hour is where she surrendered it — and where Giovanni turned up.
What the role changes for Anna's story
It gives the writers a witness who can be believed. For weeks the only people describing Anna's break were people with reasons to shade it — Britt, who was on the wrong end of the gun, Valentin, who would forgive her anything, and Anna herself, who admitted on Tuesday, Sept. 15 that she had been hallucinating Peter for months.
A treating physician is a different kind of voice. If Britt's attempted-murder complaint reaches a courtroom, the question stops being who is lying and becomes what the doctor wrote down. That is the fork the story is standing at now, and it runs straight through Dr. Nichols' notes.
There's a practical read too. This canvas is currently holding a federal case, a frame-up and a marriage collapse at the same time — Friday's hour alone moved six of them. A therapist character gives Anna's thread somewhere to happen that isn't the police station.

From 2012 to 2018 she was Detective Amy Sykes on Major Crimes, opposite Robert Gossett — who is now Marshall Ashford in Port Charles, so the two have shared a call sheet before.
